UMaine, Maine Technical College systems sign agreement to collaborate more often
By Bob Kalish
BATH - The memo of understanding signed by Joseph Westphal, chancellor of the University of Maine System and John Fitzsimmons, president of Maine Technical College System, calls for a coordinating advisory committee to be created to assure that Maine's public higher education systems "complement and collaborate with each other through a formal communication structure."
The committee would be composed of six members, three selected by the UMS chancellor and three selected by the MTCS president. In addition, each will select a co-chairman to lead the committee.
The committee's first task is to create an agenda, with the following topics suggested for inclusion:
- Enhance transfer opportunities between the two institutions.
- Review priorities and goals of the UMS and MTCS strategic plans.
- Align both institutions to support the state's economic development plans.
- Review business practices that lead to more efficient use of resources.
- Review infrastructure and access.
- Explore shared services and facilities.
- Explore opportunities for collaborative grant, scholarship and endowment proposals.
