Tech college bond aimed at expansion
Demand remains for more places in system
When Dick Campbell of Holden was a trustee of the Maine Technical College System a decade ago studies showed that there was demand for 10,000 students in the system.
A voter-approved bond issue in 1989 allowed the system's enrollment to expand by 45 percent over the next 10 years to roughly 5,300 students in degree programs. Another 15,000 take continuing education or nondegree courses. But demand remains for more places and programs in the system.
Voters this November will have a chance to help the system continue to expand. On the general election ballot is a $26.4 million bond request from the seven colleges that includes a provision requiring the system to raise $7 million in cash or in-kind donations from private sources.
