Fire Commission Plans Press Conferences
in Support of Dorm Sprinkler Bond, June 11 Ballot Question #1

June 4, 2002
Contact: John Dean, State Fire Marshal

GARDINER, Me – Over 7,000 students in Maine live in dormitory rooms without automatic fire sprinkler protection, and that’s a risk we cannot afford, according to the Maine Fire Services Protection Commission and college officials.

At a meeting Monday, June 3, the Commission voted unanimously to support Question #1 on the June 11, 2002 statewide referendum. Passage of Question #1 will, along with other educational facilities improvements, provide $7 million in grants to public colleges to install automatic fire sprinkler systems in dormitories.

“We need to be proactive – let’s not wait until we lose a life in a dorm fire,” said William O’Gara, State Senator and Chair of the Fire Commission. “The students living in those dorms deserve the highest level of protection from fire.”

The Maine Fire Protection Services Commission, University and Technical College leaders will hold a series of press conferences across the state Wednesday, June 5th and Thursday, June 6th to voice support for the dormitory fire protection sprinkler bond, part of Question #1 on the June 11 ballot.
