Maine Community College System Board of Trustees to Meet at KVCC

AUGUSTA, Me.—A regularly-scheduled meeting of the Maine Community College System (MCCS) Board of Trustees will be held next Wednesday, June 22nd, at Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield. The meeting will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be held in the Frye Building Conference Room.
At the meeting, six trustees -- four new members and two reappointed members -- will be officially sworn in. The trustees were nominated by Governor Baldacci and approved by the Maine Senate during the 2005 Legislative session. The new trustees are: Doris Belisle-Bonneau, a long-time educator from Lewiston; Shepard Lee, Chairman of Lee Auto Malls, and a resident of Westbrook; Merle R. Nelson, a former member of the Maine House of Representatives, businesswoman and educator who resides in Falmouth; and Andrea Watkins (student representative) from Windsor, a recent graduate of Kennebec Valley Community College and member of the 2005 All-Maine Academic Team. Reappointed to the Board for second terms are: Cynthia Phinney, an organizer with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1837, from Manchester; and Brian Thayer, President and CEO of Lavalley Lumber Company in Sanford, and a resident of Cumberland .
Also at the meeting, the Board will recognize out-going trustee William Cohen for eight years of service to the MCCS. Mr. Cohen recently completed his second term on the Board.
Other agenda items include:
MCCS President John Fitzsimmons will update the Board on the State budget passed this week by the Appropriations Committee and scheduled to be voted on soon by the full Legislature. In the revised budget, the MCCS received an additional cut of $326,000.
Update on Suspended Programs
The Educational Policy Committee will report to the full Board on their findings from the special meeting held June 7 th to review the budget-related program suspensions. The committee was briefed by college leaders from Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield and Washington County Community College in Calais , and heard testimony from the public. Note: The Educational Policy Committee will take up the matter at their regularly-scheduled meeting prior to the full Board meeting. The Committee will meet at 9:00 a.m. in KVCC’s Frye Building Conference Room.
Several personnel items are also on the Board agenda, including resolutions concerning the processes for the System president’s appraisal and compensation, and college presidents’ compensation package, as well as salary-related issues for confidential employees.
