AUGUSTA, Maine—The Maine Community College System (MCCS) has received a donation of $30,000 from Nelnet, the number one education finance company in Maine. The funds will be distributed as $500 scholarships to eligible students attending one of Maine's seven Community Colleges.

"Paying for college is a very real challenge for many of our students, and we are delighted to be able to offer these scholarships to sixty deserving students," said MCCS President John Fitzsimmons. "We greatly appreciate this donation, and the excellent service provided to our students by the staff at Nelnet," he said.

The contribution from Nelnet will be shared equally among the seven Community Colleges to enhance student access and retention with additional funding for financial aid. The Financial Aid Director at each college will be responsible for awarding the scholarships to low- and middle-income students. The scholarships will be awarded in the spring 2005 semester.

"Nelnet is pleased to make this contribution to increase access and opportunity for Mainers seeking a higher education at one of the MCCS schools," said Cheryl Watson, Chief Communications Officer. "The scholarship funds will help students make their educational dreams come true at a community college with a remarkable record of providing quality academic programs."

MCCS is a comprehensive two-year public college system, offering career and transfer programs, customized training, and lifelong learning to approximately 20,000 credit and noncredit students each year through its seven colleges and eight off-campus centers. The colleges offer more than 300 associate degree, certificate, and diploma options in health care, education, business, liberal studies, computer fields, hospitality, automotive, electronics, manufacturing, marine fields, public safety, and other fields. Ninety-five percent of community college graduates are placed in jobs or continue their education.
