The G.P.A Program
Graduation Protection Assurance
The MCCS Graduation Protection Assurance Program was developed in response to widespread job losses across Maine as a result of the current economic downturn. The program will cover the cost of tuition and fees for a full-time dependent student whose parent has recently lost a job or becomes unemployed while the student is enrolled in a program of study. The program will be in effect from fall 2009 through spring 2011.
Why the GPA program?
Only 50 percent of young people in Maine enroll in college immediately after graduating from high school, one reason the unemployment rate for young adults in the state is higher than for any other group: 20%.
The best place for these young adults—especially during an economic downturn—is in college, preparing for the future.
The GPA program is meant to reduce the likelihood of a young adult postponing or leaving college if a parent loses his or her job.
Who exactly is eligible?
Full-time dependent Maine students enrolled in a program of study whose parents are currently collecting unemployment benefits, have exhausted their unemployment benefits, or become unemployed while their child is enrolled at a Maine community college between fall 2009 and spring 2011. Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress, meet all other eligibility requirements, and provide all necessary documentation required by their college. If a parent becomes unemployed at any time during a semester, any GPA coverage takes effect the following semester.
What does the G.P.A. program cover?
Tuition and fees. It does not cover room and board or service fees (insurance, cable TV, etc.)
