MCCS Board of Trustees to honor Students of the Year

AUGUSTA , ME — The Maine Community College System is pleased to announce that the seven students selected as 2020 Students of the Year will be honored in a Zoom webinar being held at noon on Wednesday, April 22. The students were selected for their academic success and campus and community involvement.

The students being recognized are:

  • CMCC: Kate McPherson, Computer Technology, Litchfield;
  • EMCC: Ethan Preble, Human Services, Birch Harbor;
  • KVCC: Mason Peterson, Liberal Studies, Waterville;
  • NMCC: Marcel Chalou, Water Treatment Technology, Easton;
  • SMCC: Liam Woodworth-Cook, Liberal Studies/English Concentration, South Portland;
  • WCCC: Clinton Dakin, Engine Specialist, Stockton Springs;
  • YCCC: Billy Susanto, Computer Science, Berwick.

The seven students being honored were selected by faculty and staff at the colleges. In addition to being recognized as Students of the Year, they will each receive a John and Jana Lapoint Leadership Award in the amount of $1,000. Mr. Lapoint was president of U.F. Strainrite in Lewiston and a trustee of the Maine Community College System. After his death in 1995, his widow, Jana Lapoint, served on the Board from 1995 to 2006 and helped establish the fund for the annual awards.
